Easy Sunday

1/11/15

Today was a different sort of Sunday.  Today there was only service and Sunday school.  We didn't have Ignite tonight or anything else going on.  It would be nice to have some good quality time with Amy after we got back.  I taught Sunday school for the senior high youth for the first time in the New Year.  I would have them for a couple weeks until I had my first adult education class coming up in February.  We talked about having questions and that sometimes there are no definite answers for those questions and we need to move on in faith.  After we got back to my apartment Amy and I headed over to  Barnes and Noble and ate there while looking at books.  It's become a sort of tradition.  Then we headed back and cleaned up after gaming and sat down and watched Netflix until she left.  It was a pretty great day.

Today I learned that you have to be careful when you ask for questions.  We built a list of the top ten questions in Sunday school but then had some more time spent on it than I had intended.  It actually worked great, thanks God, but it is just good to know for future use.

PYROS and Tubing!

1/10/15

Today I had too big things happen.  The first was the PYROS packing event.  We gathering together to make homeless care packages.  I was worried about how many people would show up and if we would have enough supplies to make a good amount of bags.  This is when God showed me that He is in charge.  We had a great number of people.  It was probably one of our largest attended events.  With all the supplies I had and all the supplies that people brought we were able to make 36 bags, which we will hand out tomorrow in between services.

The other big thing I had going on today was the tubing event with the other churches.  We meet at Grace Lutheran and headed out to the tubing area.  We had it reserved for the night.  This is my first time ever tubing, I know surprise!  It was an absolute blast!  I had so much fun tubing and just hanging out with the youth that came from Redeemer.  It would be a late night tonight because after tubing we also had gaming with my friends.  I got a little sleep but I could sleep Sunday night.

Today I learned that Amy really loves me a lot.  That sounds weird because we are engaged and what not,  But she went with me on all my trips to the store for PYROS.  She even came to the event itself and helped out, which is outside her comfort zone.  I could not ask for a better future wife!

Christmas Party

1/9/15

Today the big event was the staff Christmas party at Saints on Second.  I've never been there before and it is quite a nice place.  I had the walleye sandwich which was pretty good, but I've had better fish other places.  Everyone was able to show up except for Jan and her husband who are enjoying warmer climates around this time.  Even Amy was able to show up for dinner and meet the spouses of the staff he hadn't yet.

Today I learned that Randy was my secret angel.  I was totally surprised, which I guess is the point.  He was very good and I had no idea at all.  Also he got me a great gift, a gift card to Fleet Farm.  It is super helpful for getting stuff for my apartment.

Average Work Day

1/8/15

Today was just your average work day.  I worked my normal hours here at Redeemer.  I was able to accomplish quite a bit today.  I worked on several projects coming up in the next week or so.  Also I was able to start some great progress on bigger projects and events further out.  Having events started this early is nice as I work little by little on them as they get closer.  That way I won't have the day before rushing to get it done.  That has happened a few times, but I am happy to report it is no longer the norm of how I do things, really ever since I started internship.  I've been getting better and better at that.

Today  I learned that I'm very excited to be working on the ABC Bible verses.  It was fun to get stated with some word lists for each letter.  Surprisingly the letter J has the most words for it.

Cold Day in Rochester

1/7/15

Well the big overall news today was that school was cancelled due to the cold.  This meant that I didn't have chapel for the morning which was a relief and a bummer at the same time.  I was pretty excited, and nervous, about doing it but it was nice to have some time to sleep in.  Because school was cancelled it also meant that there was no confirmation.  Again this was a bitter sweet moment.  I really enjoyed confirmation and connecting with the youth that came.  Also I would be able to plug PYROS a bit.  However it was also nice to have a quiet night and able to have a bit more time to get things done and prepare for the next week coming up.

Today I learned that I do need to talk and meet with more of the congregation members.  I was hesitant to say yes to Dave's invitation.  But during and afterward I was glad I had said yes.  It was a good time, with good company, and good food.

New Things!

1/6/15

I gave my message at the ECDC chapel this morning.  It was pretty fun and I enjoyed sharing the story with the kids.  The teachers, Michael, and the music teacher said they were very calm and that was not a normal thing for them.  I shared with them about David and Mephibosheth and how that relates to the shoes of the Gospel of peace.  I felt good about the lesson and the connection I had made.  Now onto getting the RCLS chapel ready.  Other than that the only big thing that happened today was the Elders meeting and working on my sink and shower drain.  I got some off brand Drano stuff to try and get them to drain better.  Neither one worked so tomorrow I'm going to try the name brand stuff and see what happens.

Today I learned what an elders meeting is like.  It was actually quite enjoyable.  I was able to learn some new names, meet new people, and hear about more of the behind the scenes work that goes on at services.  I think I might keep going to them for the remainder of my internship.

Back in the Office

1/5/15

Today was my first day back to Redeemer officially after my time in Hudson.  It was not as weird nor long as I had thought it might be.  It was actually pretty great to be back and doing stuff.  I had a really productive day and able to catch up on a lot of things and get ahead as well.  Today was also the first day that Miss Kristin would be here doing her story time.  I went down and stayed there for a bit of time.  I was able to meet some mother's I had only seen at worship here and there.  Also able to play with Baby Isaac a bit knocking over my water bottle which completely grabbed his attention.  It was pretty much the most adorable thing ever.  Lastly I prepared my ECDC chapel for tomorrow.  I should have worked on it a bit before the break but I was still able to finish it.

Today I learned that coming back after the break was not as weird as I thought it might be.  In fact it seems quite natural and I was able to accomplish quite a bit as I head into the new year of 2015.

A little While

1/4/15

For those of you keeping track you may have noticed that I skipped quite a few days in between this one and my last post.  I took about a week off after Christmas.  Most of the staff here at Redeemer do that because it is a pretty slow time during those days.  It was very nice to be home for Christmas and have some time with my family and Amy as well.  I enjoyed the time but also missed Redeemer quite a bit.  So when it came time to come back I arrived back in Rochester on the 3rd.  I attended service and was able to see Connor give a children's message.  It was pretty great.  then on Sunday Nicky gave the same children's message.  They had written it together and this was a great chance for them to get some practice.  They are both studying to become DCEs at Concordia Chicago.

During the education hour we had a congregation discussion about the idea of calling a second DCE.  There was some very helpful points made and questions asked.  It is cool to see a congregation really focused on the ministry aspect and not letting money being the number one driving factor.  It will be fun to see where this leads and what God has planned for Redeemer in the coming months.  After the late service we moved into Lynora and Lynette's celebration.  Lynora is retiring from her position as part time youth coordinator and tranisitoning into the role of volunteer.  The celebration was so much fun and such a blessing to them both.  I pray they were able to see how much of an impact they have made on those around them.  Lastly the day ended with an Ignite lead by Connor and Nicky about grudges and forgiveness.  I am very excited to see how they grow as they learn more about being church workers.

Today I learned that there is a tremendous amount of appreciation for Lynette and Lynora.  All of it is totally deserved.  Having only known them six months now I can see the impact they have on a small scale, and the amazing faith they each hold onto.

Christmas Eve!

12/24/14

Well Christmas Eve was everything I was lead to believe and more.  It was most definitely a long day with my Toggl timing in at 13 hours and 20 minutes.  However if I'm being honest it did feel long but not that long.  I had a joy giving my children's message three times and getting ready for the drama.  I was invited to the Beckman's along with the Harveys, Koglins, and the Lewis'.  It was a lot of fun to talk with the adults and hang out with the kids too.  I was so blessed to be a part of that and it really felt like a welcome into a special family.  The Christmas drama was better than anything we could have done ourselves.  It was clearly evident that God was working through our actions.  The message of the service was crystal clear and really spoke to those in attendance.  The youth were given many well deserved compliments on their performance in all different areas.

Today I learned what a extremely full day can feel like.  I enjoyed every minute of it but it was quite long.  So many awesome things are going on at Redeemer on Christmas Eve.  I feel so blessed to just be a part of it.

Calm Before the Storm

12/23/14

Yesterday was the calm after the storm.  Now today is the calm before the storm.  There are four services tomorrow, the drama being at 11:00 PM.  However today went very well.  We had another practice for the drama.  Today we were able to completely put in the Word plays with the entire script.  They are all doing really great.  I can't wait to see it tomorrow when everything for the whole service comes together.  They have worked extremely hard on this and it is really showing.  Also Michael has put quite a few hours into this and he is seeing some great response and growth in the youth.

Today I learned that there is a big calm before the storm.  I know that Christmas Eve is going to be a big day.  Today however is doing a lot of little things and double checking stuff here and there.

Calm After the Storm

12/22/14

Today was the start of the Christmas week getting ready for Christmas Eve and Day.  I have the Sunday school Christmas program behind me now and moving forward towards the four services on Christmas Eve which includes the Youth drama service at 11:00 PM.  I had a practice today for the drama and things are really starting to come together.  We were able to put a couple of our Word plays into the drama where they fit.  It looks really good and gets the audience prepped for the scene coming up.

Today I learned that a bit of a shorter day after a long one feels great.  There was still a bit going on today but nothing like yesterday.  It was quite nice and I am looking forward to some time in Hudson after Christmas Day service.
